In the context of verses 86,87, Prophet Muhammad felt overwhelmingly responsible for the people's denial and disbelief. Our Lord reassured his messenger by informing him that past peoples had also treated messengers in this way and that the messenger's duty was only to convey the revelation and that he was not responsible for those who did not believe.
