بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّح۪يمِ
9:1 This is an ultimatum from Allah and His Messenger to the idolaters with whom you have made a treaty:
9:2 Travel in the earth for four more months, and know that you will not overpower Allah, and Allah will disgrace the disbelievers.
9:3 This is also a proclamation from Allah and His Messenger to all the people on the day of the great pilgrimage: Allah is far from the idolaters, and so is His messenger. It is better for you if you repent. And if you turn back, know that you cannot overpower Allah. Announce to the disbelievers a painful punishment.
9:4 But keep the agreement of the pagans who have kept the terms of your agreement with them, and have not collaborated with others against you, for as long as you recognize it. God loves the righteous.
9:5 When the holy months are over, kill the pagans wherever you find them (if they still refuse to make peace). Seize them, encircle them and watch their every move. If they repent and pray and pay zakat, then let them go free. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
9:6 If one of the idolaters asks you for the safety of passage, give him protection so that he may hear the word of Allah; then bring him to his own safety. For they are an ignorant people.
9:7 What agreement can the idolaters have with Allah and His Messenger? Except those who have made an agreement with you in the Holy Mosque. Observe their rights as they observe yours. Allah loves the righteous.
9:8 How can it be? If they had prevailed over you, they would have observed neither kinship nor treaty. With their mouths they speak pleasant words to pacify you, but their hearts desire the opposite. Many of them have gone astray.
9:9 They sold the verses of Allah for a small price and went astray from His way. How evil is what they do.
9:10 They do not consider for a believer any kinship or agreement; they are the aggressors and transgressors.
9:11 If they repent and establish prayer and pay zakat, they will be your brothers in religion. Thus do We explain the verses to those who know.
9:12 If they break their covenant after they have made a covenant and attack your religion, fight the leaders of disbelief, for their covenant is null and void. Perhaps they will desist.
9:13 Are you not going to fight against the people who break their covenant and attempt to drive out the messenger and are the first to start (war) with you? Or do you fear them? It is Allah whom you should fear if you believe.
9:14 Fight them, so that Allah may punish them with your hands and make you victorious, and give relief to the believing people,
9:15 Remove the anger from their hearts. Allah accepts the repentance of whom He wills. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
9:16 Do you think that you will be left until Allah knows and distinguishes between those among you who strive hard for Him and those who take none as close friends except Allah and His Messenger and the believers? Allah is All-Knowing of what you do.
9:17 The idolaters should not frequent the mosques of Allah, while they are witnesses of their own disbelief. Their deeds have come to naught. They will abide in the Fire forever.
9:18 Only those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, who observe prayer, pay the zakat, and fear none but Allah, visit the mosques of Allah frequently. They are of those who find the right path.
9:19 Do you equate giving water to pilgrims and keeping the Holy Mosque ready for them to visit with believing in Allah and the Last Day, observing prayer, paying zakat and striving hard in the way of Allah? With Allah they are not one. Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
9:20 For those who believe and emigrate and strive in the Way of Allah with their money and their lives, there is a higher degree with Allah. They are the winners.
